II. Types of Tracheostomy Tubes

a. There are several types of that are used commonly in the pediatric population

i. Shiley: made of polyvinyl chloride

ii. Bivona: made of silicone

iii. Tracoe: may be made from either PVC or silicone depending on the tube type

iv. Each brand has several options for tube size, and need for cuff

b. Size (length): Neonatal, Pediatric, or Adult

c. Cuffed vs. Uncuffed: A cuffed trach tube may be used in children requiring mechanical ventilation

- Shiley cuffed tubes are inflated with air (no more than 5ml)

- Bivona cuffs are inflated with either air or water depending on the type of tube

i. “TTS”- Tight to Shaft (clear pilot balloon).

When deflated the tube’s outer wall rests “tight to shaft” which reduces the risk of trauma to the trachea.

1. Inflated with sterile water (no more than 5ml)

2. Allows intermittent or temporary cuff use

ii. “Aire-Cuf” (blue pilot balloon)

1. Inflated with air (no more than 5ml)

d.  Flextend- flexible tube extension keeps the connections away from the neck, chin, and stoma
