- Once cleared by the surgeon, a G-button may be changed by trained caregivers, nurses, and physicians
- Non- balloon G-buttons or gastrojejunostomy tubes are not to be changed in the pediatrician’s office or at home
- Keep a same size back up gastrostomy kit on hand
- Gather same size balloon type gastrostomy kit, syringe, water, water based lubricant, clean towel or gauze
- Check G-button brand/type, length and French. Changes in G-button size are to be cleared by your surgeon’s office.
- Draw up 3-5 ml of water and inflate the new G-button balloon to ensure there is no leaking or damage to the G-button.
- Apply a small amount of lubricant to the end of the G-button to be placed and set it on a clean surface
- Insert the syringe tip into balloon port of the G-button. Remove the water from the balloon and gently remove the button. Do not pull against resistance.
- Insert the new G-button into the stoma. Fill the balloon with 3-5 ml of water
- Connect the syringe and G-button extension included in the gastrostomy kit to the newly placed G-button and check for gastric contents.
